ESSEX — A driver was injured late Thursday morning after pulling in front of a train, which struck the car, police said.

Jane Rowe, 54, of Essex Junction, was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, according to Essex police. Rowe was the only person in the car.

The crash occurred near the train station in Essex Junction about 11 a.m. and closed Central and North streets for several hours.

Evidence indicated the railroad crossing lights and audible signal had been activated for almost 50 seconds before Rowe’s vehicle crossed in front of the train, according to Essex police. The New England Central Railroad engineer and conductor both applied the train’s emergency brakes when the collision occurred.

Police said they don’t anticipate any criminal charges to be filed.

The crash is still under investigation, and no additional details were available.

Police had asked anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the Essex Police Department at 802-878-8331.
