SOUTH BURLINGTON — Two school board write-in candidates have agreed to pay small fines for campaign finance violations during their failed bids in the last election.
Residents Marcy Brigham and Dan Emmons ran for the board after its decision to drop the Rebels moniker for school sports teams. Both opposed changing the name and campaigned against the South Burlington school budget, which failed twice before its ultimate passage.
Their incumbent opponents, Monica Ostby and Paul Engles, filed campaign finance complaints against Brigham and Emmons. After an investigation, the attorney general’s office found the pair committed a number of violations.
In a settlement with the state, both first-time candidates acknowledge they received contributions in excess of limits, failed to maintain campaign accounts and failed to properly identify who was paying for campaign materials. Brigham and Emmons signed the agreement this month.
The settlement requires both to pay $250 fines and correct and refile their campaign finance reports. In exchange, the state agreed not to sue or bring charges against Emmons and Brigham.
An earlier investigation into alleged campaign finance violations by the Rebel Alliance political action committee, a group that formed in opposition to the name change, found no violations.
