A new director will take the helm of Vermonters for Criminal Justice Reform.

The group’s current executive director, Suzi Wizowaty, announced this week she will step down at the end of the month.

The advocacy organization, founded in 2013, calls for a reduction in incarceration rates and has been an outspoken critic of Vermont’s out-of-state prison program.

Wizowaty, a former state representative, said the organization is “in a really strong place.” She is stepping down to return to her writing career. She previously published three books of fiction.

Tom Dalton, a well-known figure in the opiate addiction recovery movement in Chittenden County, will take the reins of the organization in July. Dalton has been the program director for the Howard Center’s Safe Recovery program for 18 years.

Wizowaty praised Dalton’s advocacy experience.

“He really understands the larger criminal justice issues,” she said.
