COLCHESTER — A Colchester High School student brought a gun to school Tuesday that he was carrying “as a precaution” and did not intend to use, according to police.

School administrators heard about the gun and searched the student, finding a loaded small-caliber handgun, according to a news release from the Colchester Police Department. Police were called and recovered the weapon.

Colchester police did not immediately respond to requests for further information as to why the student felt the need to carry a loaded firearm at school.

The student does not have a history of bullying or making threats, and according to the release police are still investigating the matter. Anyone with more information should call the department at 802-264-5555.

The student faces charges in the family division of Chittenden County Superior Court, according to police. The release did not say what those charges will be.
