Herring competency evaluations still pending

Psychiatric evaluations of a woman accused of killing four women, including a social worker, are still underway.

Jody Herring is facing one count of first degree murder in the shooting death of state social worker Lara Sobel and three counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of her cousins, Rhonda and Regina Herring, and her aunt, Julie Falzarano.

In April, Herring’s defense attorney David Sleigh moved for the case to be dismissed on the grounds that Herring is not competent to stand trial, which he said was based on two psychiatrists’ evaluations of the defendant.

Assistant Attorney General John Treadwell, who is prosecuting the case, questioned Sleigh’s motion. Prosecutors requested an independent psychiatric evaluation to be conducted by an expert of their choosing.

At a status conference Friday, Treadwell told the court the evaluation has not yet been completed, but he expects to get the report from the state’s psychiatric expert by Thanksgiving.

Judge John Pacht and the two attorneys agreed to hold a status conference in December, at which point further competency proceedings could be scheduled.

“We’ve got to get this moving,” Pacht said.
