ST. JOHNSBURY — Vermont State Police said they have located a gray Jeep that was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in a hospital parking lot Tuesday morning.

“Members of law enforcement are speaking with the vehicle’s occupants,” police said in a press release at about 7:15 p.m. “No further details are available at this time.”

A man was killed in the apparent homicide at a lot across the street from Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, police said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the incident was not random, and the victim was targeted,” police said at about 5 p.m.

Police were still searching for the vehicle as of about 5 p.m., describing it as a gray Jeep Wrangler with Connecticut license plates. Police said the car had been captured on surveillance video at 8:40 a.m. — around the time the shooting took place.

Police had described the occupants as “potentially armed and dangerous.”

No additional injuries were reported, Vermont State Police spokesperson Adam Silverman said, and no suspects were in custody.

The hospital went into lockdown, which has since been lifted, as a result of the shooting, hospital officials said in a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday morning. Police said the hospital was secure.

In the statement, hospital officials said the victim “was not affiliated with NVRH as staff or a patient” and that the shooting “appears to be a targeted incident for those directly involved.”

Police did not publicly identify the victim as they work to notify his next of kin. His body was taken to the chief medical examiner’s office in Burlington for an autopsy.

Emergency responders at the scene were focused on Parking Lot A, located on Hospital Drive across from the hospital. Around 11:45 a.m., two cruisers and an ambulance were parked in a corner of the lot farthest away from the hospital. Several dozen other vehicles were parked in the lot.
