State troopers are investigating a Friday motor vehicle crash that killed a Morgan man involved in several notable rental disputes throughout Vermont.
Gary Megrath, 59, died at North Country Hospital in Newport, where he was taken after crashing his SUV in Morgan that night, according to a Vermont State Police press release.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. Friday, troopers said, near the intersection of Mead Hill and Route 111 in the Orleans County town.
Megrath was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban east on Route 111 when he crossed through the oncoming westbound lane and veered off the road, state police said.
The driver’s side of the vehicle struck a tree, trapping Megrath inside, troopers said.
Derby Line Fire Department members arrived and were able to free the man from the SUV, but his injuries proved fatal, troopers said.
State police said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
VTDigger wrote about Megrath last November, when he was the subject of a court case and a public rental dispute in Caledonia County.
Sarah and Benjamin McIntosh, a mother and son, ran a short-term rental in Lyndonville that they had rented to Megrath in early 2019. The McIntoshes claimed he refused to leave the property when his stay ran out. After they filed eviction paperwork, the McIntoshes said, Megrath began a campaign of harassment and stalking.
Megrath was eventually ordered by the courts to leave the rental in September, and a judge upheld a restraining order filed by Benjamin McIntosh against him.
The case was one in a string of similar incidents across Vermont involving Megrath.
