COLCHESTER — Police investigating a disturbance at the Fort Ethan Allen apartments early Monday said they found close to a dozen crude explosive devices in one residence.
The disturbance was reported at about 2 a.m., when one resident reported hearing loud banging from a neighboring apartment. When confronted by police, the occupant of the apartment where the noise was originating told police he had “molotov cocktails” inside, according to a Colchester Police Department news release.
It does not appear any of the devices ignited, and no injuries were reported.
Officers arrested Ethan Vasnak, 28. Police said he let them into his apartment and they discovered close to a dozen glass containers filled with a fluid that smelled like gasoline and had wicks protruding from them.
Vasnak faces charges of possession of a destructive device, aggravated disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief, according to police. He was to be arraigned later Monday in Chittenden County Superior Court.
Police evacuated about 23 apartments at the Champlain Housing Trust-owned complex while they secured the scene. The Vermont hazardous materials team and state police bomb squad were called in to assist.
