A 53-year-old man was found dead outside a burned vehicle in Thetford on Sunday.
Brian Stephens of Fairlee was pronounced dead at the scene in the early hours of that morning, according to the Vermont State Police.
A passing motorist saw the burned Kia car partially in the woods off the side of Route 5 in Thetford, near the intersection with Sanborn Road, Det. Christopher Pilner said.
Stephens was found alongside the car. Pilner declined to say whether the man had sustained burn wounds, but said details about the cause of death would be revealed in a pending autopsy report.
Nothing learned in the investigation or observed at the scene suggested foul play, Pilner said, and troopers believe the death was accidental.
Stephens’ next-of-kin has been notified, the detective said.
