The Vermont State Police are investigating the shooting of a domestic violence suspect.

A suspect armed with a gun was shot by troopers 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the Vermont State Police.

Two state police troopers and Bristol Police Department officer were responding to a domestic violence call on Lower Notch Road in Bristol, police said. The suspect confronted police with a firearm. A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect refused to drop the weapon before troopers opened fire, police said.

The suspect was transported by helicopter to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment. His condition is unknown. No one else was injured in the incident.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin and further investigation, police said.

The troopers involved in the shooting will not be identified until the initial stages of the investigation are complete, police said. They will be put on administrative leave for a minimum of five days. The Vermont State Police said the troopers “will return to administrative duty while the investigation into the use of force is under review by the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office.”

The investigation will be conducted by the state police’s Major Crime Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Search Team and Field Force Division.
