What began as an attempted traffic stop in Lyndon turned into a 26-mile car chase with speeds reaching 100 mph Friday night, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident started around 11:35 p.m. when troopers from the St. Johnsbury barracks tried to stop a black Chevy Impala on Pinehurst Street for apparent traffic violations, state police said.

But the Impala sped away, leading the troopers to pursue it, according to state police.

The chase stretched for about 26 miles, state police said, and speeds reached about 100 mph.

In a press release, state police did not identify what roads the chase spanned, other than its starting point in Lydon. A person answering the phone at the St. Johnsbury barracks Monday said there were no additional details available about the incident and that the trooper involved in the pursuit was off.

Troopers gave up their pursuit Friday because of increased traffic and concern for motorists’ safety, state police said. Meanwhile, the driver of the Impala got away.

Anyone with information about the incident or the driver is asked to call Trooper Sean Pecuch at 802-748-3111.
