A man was shot dead Wednesday night in St. Johnsbury, according to the Vermont State Police.
Troopers didn’t identify the victim but said the incident — which investigators consider a homicide — happened around 9:50 p.m. on the 100 block of Pearl Street.
St. Johnsbury Police responded to a reported shooting around that time and found the man’s body inside an apartment there, according to state police. Troopers were called in as backup.
Witnesses told troopers they saw at least two vehicles flee the area after the shooting. State police said a description of the vehicles was unavailable.
Michael McCaffrey, 50, who lives next door to the reported address, said on Thursday that he and others heard multiple gunshots Wednesday night.
“More than one — it was about three or four,” he said.
Another Pearl Street resident passing through Thursday morning, who would not provide his name, said he also heard several gunshots before seeing two silver vehicles speeding by, one with Massachusetts plates.
State troopers, town police and a Caledonia Sheriff’s deputy were all near the scene around 11 a.m. Thursday. Investigators walked back and forth between a crime-scene van and the apartment.
A dark-colored hat lay in the grass in front of the slate-blue building. An investigator later placed it inside an evidence bag.
Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public, and that the incident appears to be isolated.
Troopers provided no additional details about the incident but asked anyone with information to call the barracks in St. Johnsbury at 802-748-3111 or submit tips online.
