The Burlington Police Department has put an officer on administrative leave as the Vermont State Police investigate the death of a man who had an altercation with the officer earlier this week.

BPD Officer Corey Campbell responded to a call of a disorderly male at the University of Vermont Medical Center Monday. Police say 54-year-old Douglas Kilburn punched Campbell in the face, after which Campbell punched Kilburn and subdued him.

Kilburn was found dead Thursday at his home in Burlington’s Northgate Apartments. Burlington police called in the Vermont State Police to conduct an independent investigation into Kilburn’s death.

Campbell has been placed on administrative leave until March 18, and subsequently he will be on administrative duty as the investigation continues, according to a Friday press release from BPD chief Brandon del Pozo.

“He has no disciplinary history and an unblemished record of service,” del Pozo said.

Kilburn’s autopsy was performed Friday in Burlington. The determination of the cause and manner of his death is pending toxicology results and could take several weeks, the Vermont State Police said in a press release.

State police say that Kilburn assaulted Campbell in the hospital’s parking lot before Campbell was able to gain control. Kilburn was treated for his injuries and discharged Tuesday.
