BURLINGTON — A 61-year-old man from Winooski was struck and killed by a car Thursday evening while walking his dog across North Avenue in Burlington’s New North End. Police identified the victim as Jonathan Jerome. The dog is in stable condition.
The accident occurred around 5 p.m. on North Avenue Poirier Place, closing the road to traffic. The road reopened around 7:30 p.m. North Avenue is the main thoroughfare through the New North End.
Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo said the man had died after being struck by the car. His dog was in critical condition.
The Burlington Police Department, the Burlington Fire Department, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene.
The pedestrian appears to have been crossing the intersection under low light conditions, police said in a statement. A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver was not distracted, was driving under the speed limit and was obeying traffic laws, police said.
Neighbor Alden Finnie didn’t witness the accident but walked to the scene after seeing the police lights. He said that many people in the neighborhood walked their dogs in the area and across North Avenue.
“It’s a major crossing right here,” he said.
