Two people are dead after a three-vehicle crash on Thursday evening in which a pickup truck drove north in the southbound lane of Interstate 91 in Hartford, Vermont State Police said.
Hartford police dispatch sent out a call about 5:40 p.m. reporting a wrong-way driver on I-91 Exit 13, Vermont State Trooper Stacia Geno said in a news release. Moments later, 911 received a report of a crash at mile marker 73.
The driver of a 2015 Toyota Corolla, 33-year-old Patrick Covey, of Bradford, Vermont, was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived, according to Geno. The alleged wrong-way driver, White River Junction resident Herbert Kennedy, 89, who was traveling in a Chevrolet S10 pickup, was found in critical condition and taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, officials said.
The driver of the third vehicle involved in the crash, Cynthia Dale, 61, of White River Junction, went to DHMC with minor injuries as a precaution, police said. Dale was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla, according to Geno.
