The Burlington Police Department has arrested the last at-large suspect in the Sept. 30 assault and robbery of a local student.

Burlington Police, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals, arrested Tam Mai on Saturday afternoon during a traffic stop. BPD Detective Mike Beliveau said police saw Mai in a vehicle in the Grove Street/Patchen Road area of Burlington and pulled him over.

The other suspect who was at large, Rowan Baek, turned himself in Nov. 23.

Police say a group of men harassed the student on the sidewalk on Elmwood Avenue just north of Pearl Street around 1:19 a.m. on Sept. 30. The men then allegedly struck him in the head, which caused severe lacerations and skull fractures.

The suspects stole personal items from the student, and one stayed behind to kick him after he was already injured on the ground, police say.

Police had already arrested Bailey Lefebvre, 18, of Milton, who was charged with being an accessory in the assault and robbery, and with larceny.

Baek, 19, of Milton, and Lefebvre were released on court-ordered conditions. Mai, 23, of Winooski, is being held without bail.

Beliveau said the department was not planning on making any arrests for harboring the fugitives at this time.

He said that he believes the department’s media push asking for the public’s help in finding the men played a role in Baek’s decision to turn himself in.

“I think the media push played a role for Rowan Baek, who turned himself in, but for Tam Mai, we had to find him ourselves,” Beliveau said.
