This story by Chris Mays was published by the Brattleboro Reformer on June 25.

BRATTLEBORO — An anti-Semitic message scrawled on a sidewalk in chalk on Elliot Street created a stir on social media this weekend.

“Toten die Juden,” the message read, translating from German to “kill the Jews.”

On Sunday morning, State’s Attorney Tracy Shriver told the Reformer she was aware of the incident through Facebook. She said police had not contacted her about the incident.

One Facebook user described the writing as terrible, disgusting and scary.

“This is unacceptable,” wrote another.

Erin Scaggs, co-owner of Elliot Street Fish, Chips & More, replaced the message with one of her own. She drew hearts and wrote the word “love” using chalk.

“Chalk art never felt so good,” Scaggs told the Reformer. She said the writing on the sidewalk was located near where the Restless Rooster Cafe had been at 124 Elliot St.

Detective Ryan Washburn, shift supervisor at the Brattleboro Police Department on Sunday, could not be reached for more information by press time.
