Amos Beede, 38, died on Monday, a week after he was assaulted at a homeless camp in Burlington, according to the Burlington Police Department.

Beede, a transgender male, was hospitalized after the attack on May 23.

Police are not ruling out Beede’s transgender status as a motive. Until an investigation is complete, police are “viewing the homicide as a possible bias incident.”

Beede sustained multiple blunt force injuries to his face and head. He was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center on Monday and was found to have a subdural hematoma, facial fractures and several broken ribs, police said. Beede was unconscious and unable to speak, with uncertain prospects for recovery, as of Wednesday when police first released information about the assault.

The Vermont Medical Examiner is determining the cause of death.

Anyone with information about the assault should call city police or Champlain Valley Crime Stoppers at 802-864-6666.
