One person has died in the crash of a small plane in Bennington County, Vermont State Police have reported. An overnight search triggered Sunday night by reports of a missing plane has located the wreckage, police said.
Police reported Monday morning that search teams located the downed aircraft in a heavily wooded area on Bald Mountain, near the location provided by the Federal Aviation Administration, three miles off Route 9 in Woodford.
The pilot’s body was found at the site. On Monday, rescue personnel and state police detectives went to the location to remove the remains and assess the scene.
Rescue workers were searching the mountain on ATVs Sunday, but had failed to locate any sign of a crash as of 11:40 p.m., according to Vermont State Police Lt. Roger Farmer, the commander of the state’s Search and Rescue team. He said rescue crews searched the mountain on Sunday and set up a command post at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School.
According to reports, the pilot was alone.
Bald Mountain is located in the Glastenbury Wilderness Area. Its elevation is 2,800 feet.
With Mount Anthony Union Middle School in session on Monday, Farmer said that the command post would move from the middle school to the village fire department on River Street. He said that school officials offered the use of a room at the school, but the decision was made to move the post.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board officials are working with local officials to assist with the investigation and recovery efforts.
