John Treadwell will leave his job as chief of the Vermont attorney general’s criminal division to become a Vermont Superior Court judge.
The appointment was one of two Gov. Phil Scott made Friday.
The judiciary will decide Treadwell’s starting date and the area of Vermont where he will serve for a one- to two-year period. He is filling an opening left when Scott elevated Judge Karen Russell Carroll to the Vermont Supreme Court.
Treadwell, who has held his current position since 2014, has prosecuted high-profile cases including the quadruple homicide case against Jody Herring and has been in charge of criminal investigations.
“I’ve spent my career representing all Vermonters as a prosecutor in the criminal justice system,” Treadwell said in a news release Friday. “It is a privilege to be able to continue the work of providing justice for Vermonters as a member of Vermont’s Superior Court.”
Before leading the attorney general’s criminal division, Treadwell worked within the division for 14 years. He has also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney and a deputy state’s attorney in Chittenden County. He went to Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Scott selected Treadwell from a short list of qualified candidates put forth by the Judicial Nominating Board.
Scott also appointed Frederick Glover, of Ludlow, as the Windsor County probate judge. Glover, a Democrat, is a private practice attorney with experience working for the U.S. Department of Justice. He went to Castleton University and Antioch School of Law.
Glover replaces Joanne Ertel, who is set to retire. In accordance with the tradition of appointing candidates from the same party, Scott chose Glover from a list of candidates from the Windsor County Democratic Committee.
“I thank John and Fred for their commitment to serving Vermont in these important judicial positions,” Scott said in a news release. “Both are legal professionals of the utmost integrity, with the skills, knowledge and temperament that will benefit our judiciary.”
