SHREWSBURY – A Shrewsbury woman whose death last week is under investigation by police suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her head, according to a newly filed state record.

However, while a death certificate for Sara Reynolds, 32, listed the gunshot wound as the cause of her death, the document stated the manner of her death remains pending.

The space on the death certificate stating how the fatal injury occurred also listed, “Pending.”

Vermont State Police, in a press release issued last week, provided few details about how Reynolds died, including what caused her death. The death certificate filed with the state Department of Health this week is the first document to reveal that she died of a gunshot wound to her head.

State police said this week only that along with the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s Office they are continuing to investigate Reynolds’ death.

Police said they were called to a home Reynolds shared with her boyfriend, Travis Bailey, 28, at 9675 Cold River Road in Shrewsbury around 1:55 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.

Bailey, police said, called 911 from a neighbor’s home reporting that Reynolds had killed herself in their residence.

It was only hours earlier, at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, police said, that Reynolds had called 911 reporting that Bailey had left their home and may be suicidal.

As troopers were responding to the residence, Reynolds called back and said that Bailey had returned and everything was fine, according to police.

Troopers continued to the scene and met with Reynolds and Bailey separately. Both Bailey and Reynolds “indicated that there were no issues and that it was just a misunderstanding,” police said in the release.

Detectives and crime scene investigators spent most of the day on Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Cold River Road home probing Reynolds’ death.

The death certificate filed Tuesday stated that Reynolds, a registered nurse, was pronounced dead at her Shrewsbury home about 2:16 a.m. on Sept. 21.

Family and friends have started a GoFundMe online fundraiser to help pay for her burial expenses.

“Sara was a beautiful and young fun loving, caring, honest, trustworthy daughter, mother, friend and sister,” the posting reads. “She would help anyone if she could and has done so much good in this world being a heartfelt nurse caring more about others than herself. It is truly a nightmare for her loved ones to endure life without her beautiful soul here with us.”
